Op 50 komt Dan the Banjo Man oftewel Phil Cordell binnen. Was Phil ook niet the man achter I will return van Springwater?

The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this period

Looking at my records, the number 8 in the Troef 20 that week was "Vive l'amour, viva l'amore" by Ciska Peters. Billy Paul was at number 9 and Next One at number 3. So the duplication of the number 9 position in the printed list was an printing error.

Here is a summary of what was happening on RNI over the New Year period 1973 - 1974:

Friday 28 December 1973

Robin Banks, Graham Gill, Marc van Amstel and Hans ten Hooge leave on the tender and Mike Ross, Sheila Ross, Hans Molenaar and Gerard Smit return to the Mebo 2. Hans Molenaar takes over Buitengaats and Dutch Service news during the day is read by Hans ten Hooge, Marc van Amstel, Hans Molenaar and Gerard Smit. International Service programmes are:

20.00 Mike Ross (Top 100 of 1973, part 2)

22.00 Brian McKenzie

1.00 Rob Eden

3.00 - 6.00 Skyline

At the end of the second part of the Top 100 (the first was a week ago) only 96 records have been played. Medium wave reception is poor, although it sounds like the signal is stronger than what the studio is pushing to the transmitter. Very strong interference from Lille.

Saturday 29 December 1973

The records that I have heard most on RNI in the last week, apart from the Treiterschijf, are:

Blue Magic - Look me up

Helen Reddy - Leave me alone (Ruby Red Dress)

Marie Osmond - Paper Roses

Jan Van Veen - Meer

Albert West - Put your head on my shoulder

Billy Paul - Thanks for saving my life

Ringo Starr - Photograph

Slade - Merry Xmas everybody

Ray Coniff - Harmony

Charlie Rich - Most beautiful girl

Buitengaats returns to normal this week with Hans Molenaar after last week's US Hot 100 show. International service programmes are:

20.00 Mike Ross

22.00 Rob Eden (Music of the mind)

24.00 Brian McKenzie

2.00 Beach Boys in concert

4.00 - 6.00 Skyline

Sunday 30 December 1973

Much less interference from Lille today. Jan Boezeroen played the hits of 1973 on his programme today and Leo van der Goot's "LP Driemaster" started today at 18.30 rather than 19.00 as usual on Sunday. International Service is:

20.00 Mike Ross (Hitback Show)

22.00 Brian McKenzie (Music of the mind)

24.00 Rob Eden

2.00 - 4.00 Mike Ross

Brian McKenzie says that, despite the current oil crisis, RNI has adequate oil supplies, but they may need to close down two nights per week for aerial and studio maintenance.

Monday 31 December 1973

Throughout today's Dutch Service there are small snippets of news from 1973 and Leo van der Goot features hits from 1973 on Driemaster. Today's final Dutch Service news is at exactly 20.00, rather than a few minutes before as normal. International Service this evening is:

20.00 Mike Ross

22.00 Rob Eden (Song for Europe) (this features hits from mainland Europe from 1973)

23.30 Gerard Smit & Hans Molenaar (Dutch New Year)

24.30 Mike Ross, Rob Eden & Brian McKenzie (UK New Year)

1.30 Aftermath

4.00 - 6.00 Skyline

Gerard and Hans run through events around RNI in 1973. No news bulletins after 23.00. Rob Eden says "RNI - big in 1973, even bigger in 1974".

Tuesday 1 January 1974

International Service programmes this evening are:

20.00 Mike Ross (Top 100 of 1973)

23.00 Brian McKenzie (Top 100 of 1973)

2.00 Rob Eden (Moody Blues in concert)

4.00 - 6.00 Skyline

A total of 101 records are played in the Top 100, which is not in any specific order, however two are played twice - "Broken down angel" by Nazareth and "Daniel" by Elton John - and, of those included in the programmes from the previous two Fridays, "Sylvia" by Focus and "Magic Woman Touch" by the Hollies are not played. Brian McKenzie says at the end of the Top 100 "So until maybe next year when we can repeat the same programme".

Wednesday 2 January 1974

Today is Leo van der Goot's birthday - he comments on Driemaster "363 dagen te gaan in 1974, 363 Driemasters ook". International Service is:

20.00 Mike Ross

22.00 Brian McKenzie

1.00 Rob Eden

4.00 - 6.00 Skyline

Interesting to note the comments that looked forward to a full year of RNI in 1974, although, as we know now, that was not to be.
